You’re valuable, right up until the moment you try to describe that value to someone outside your building.

This is the quiet trap of specialization in a niche technical market: becoming so fluent in one organization’s internal way of doing things that your skills stop translating cleanly to the broader industry around you.

How This Actually Happens

It rarely happens on purpose. A hardware team standardizes on an internal design tool instead of an industry-standard one. An embedded systems group keeps extending a legacy architecture because rewriting it is expensive, and five years later the team’s deepest expertise is in something almost nobody else uses. It looks like checking a specialized salary benchmarking source for your specific discipline once or twice a year, the same way you’d check a home’s value even without planning to sell it. It looks like occasionally attending an industry conference or technical society event outside your own company’s walls, not to network aggressively, but to hear what other organizations are actually working on.
